My written words

I always loved creating written works. The research, organization and creation of the final paper or report never came easily, but I did enjoy the process largely because it was a true reflection of the work I put into it. I also have a deep connection to words and connotations and meaning. The sound and feel of every word or phrase I learned or used is still with me.

I always dabbled in creative fiction - poems, lyrics, usual fare for a kid. In college I turned to more serious creative writing. One short-story was well-received by one of my professors and he encouraged me to write more fiction more seriously. Plots and characters were easy for me to create and develop. I wrote some short short stories for a while until one of my college housemates, a creative art major, turned me on to Graphic Novels. I wrote a few full-year treatments (Nicad and Simbatu, among others). My housemate did some drawings and I sent them off to every publisher I could find. One big publisher hit but folded before they bought any of our works.

I since stuck with short-stories. Many of these are rather long - I find it hard to stick to the "under 2000 word" limit of many contests. I have one novel in the works - tentatively titled "Hard Life" but I would rather this be just another long short story.

I have been on a break of sorts for a couple of years as I try to complete other technical projects but as of 2015 I am back to writing again.

My original "theses" from 1993 was:

This is an ongoing project in forward, realist writing. It is an effort based on the notion that our own humble present was once a wild, wonderful future.

Too often, gadgets and buzzwords drive the action in a fictional future society. My attempt is to create a real, living future for the reader based not on what the narrator tells you, but on the observables of the characters and setting. I try to use a style that puts the reader into the character's mindset. On first read, some of it seems odd or wrong with "missing" information. Much is left unexplained in "conventional" terms. But such is daily life, in our time or any time. So don't lose hope. You can cope, survive and thrive. I hope on some level my works resonate with and entertain you.
